Swell Bender was born in Capitola, California, in June 2026.
During a family surf lesson, my daughter caught her first wave ever. For a moment, I could only see the swell rising behind her. Then her head appeared above the crest, and there she was, standing on top of the world. Later, resting on my board beyond the break, I talked with other surfers while we waited. Kelp brushed against our legs. There was nowhere else to be and nothing to rush. You paddle when the ocean gives you something to paddle for. For a while, you live on nature’s timetable. Closer to shore, kids at surf camp chased wave after wave. There were as many girls as boys in the water, and later they were all dancing together at a beach party after the morning lessons.
Everyone seemed to belong. That feeling extended through Capitola: surfboards strapped to bicycles, colorful Venetian houses, music on the beach, families gathering, kids playing, people dancing. Even under the June gloom, the place felt unusually happy. After our lesson, our instructor mentioned how exhausted he was because the waves had been so good for days that he and his friends couldn’t stop surfing. “Swell bender,” he said. I asked what that meant. The phrase captured everything we had just experienced: chasing good waves, losing track of time, living closer to nature, and being drawn into the community that forms around the water.

During our lesson, I overheard our instructor talking with older surfers about competitions and life after high school. He was working to afford competition entry fees and thinking about community college because he felt it was time to “grow up.” My reaction was simple: Stay on the waves as long as you can. Surfing gives Swell Bender its meaning, so the brand should give something back. We want to help young amateur surfers stay in the sport by supporting competition entry fees and programs that keep kids in the water. To give them more time to surf, compete, learn, and see where the waves take them.
Keep the Waves Worth Riding
Our responsibility also extends to the places where surfing happens. Swell Bender will support efforts to keep surf breaks, beaches, and surrounding waters clean, with a particular focus on the coastal areas surfers depend on. The mission is simple: Help keep young surfers in the water and help keep the water worth surfing.
